Hello hello, and welcome back!
I’m Raquel Sands — This space is for people navigating the in-between — the pragmatic realists: loyal, capable, overworked and the intuitive dreamers: creative, curious, allergic to conformity.
Most of us are a mix of both — grounded and glowing, weary and wild — trying to design lives that actually fit.
Today’s theme: being your own boss.
💼 Redefining What “Boss” Really Means
When we hear boss, we picture a title — the person who signs the checks, approves the time-off requests, or controls the calendar invites.
That’s the external definition: power over.
But I want to talk about the internal definition: power within.
A boss isn’t just someone managing your role. It’s anyone — in work, family, or friendship — who tries to manage you.
And the moment you decide to reclaim that power, you shift from “employee” to “architect.”
Because even if you can’t fire your manager or rewrite company policy, you can still choose how you show up, how you’re spoken to, and how you spend your energy.
That’s real leadership.
🌙 You’re Hiring Them, Too
When you apply for a job, remember: it’s not a one-way street.
You’re interviewing them just as much as they’re interviewing you.
Ask questions. Clarify expectations. Get a feel for the environment and communication style.
You have more power than you think — in salary negotiation, work boundaries, and how much of your creativity you allow others to claim.
You are the boss of your own participation.
🌱 You’re Not a Cog — You’re the System
Corporate structures were not designed with the individual in mind.
They were built for efficiency, not nourishment.
But you, my friend, are not replaceable hardware — you’re an ecosystem.
Think of yourself like a plant:
You need the right soil, light, and conditions to thrive.
Some jobs are deserts. Some are greenhouses. Some are compost — full of lessons you’ll later grow from.
The system may treat you like a cog, but your job is to remember: you are the machine.
You get to decide what fuels it, when to shut it down, and when to rebuild it from scratch.
🧘🏽 Reclaiming Power Through Check-Ins
Bossing yourself starts with awareness.
Five minutes. That’s all you need.
Take a walk and talk to yourself out loud.
Ask:
What’s draining me?
What do I need today?
What feels out of alignment?
Meditation quiets. Journaling reveals. But checking in — that conversation with yourself — recalibrates.
Once you see the truth, you can plan action: update your resume, set a boundary, schedule a conversation, or explore what’s next.
Because self-leadership isn’t about control — it’s about clarity.
🔥 The System Wasn’t Built for You — Build Your Own
Let’s be honest: the workplace as we know it is crumbling.
The myth of job security, the climb-the-ladder model — all of it is outdated.
COVID forced the conversation, but the cracks were always there.
So, if the system wasn’t designed with you in mind, stop waiting for it to evolve.
Be your own boss by designing a career that honors your rhythm — whether that means going freelance, negotiating flexibility, or simply refusing to internalize chaos.
🌕 Final Reflection
Being your own boss isn’t about quitting tomorrow (though sometimes it is).
It’s about knowing where your power lives — and using it intentionally.
You get to choose:
How people speak to you.
How much of your energy you give.
When to stay and when to go.
What version of yourself you bring to work each day.
That’s leadership. That’s sovereignty. That’s designing your life from the inside out.
Take five minutes tonight to check in with yourself.
Ask: Am I acting like the boss of my life — or waiting for permission?
The difference between the two is where your freedom begins.
